Where to Stay in Warsaw: Best Areas
A practical breakdown of where to stay in Warsaw, comparing the Old Town and Royal Route, Srodmiescie near the Palace of Culture, riverside Powisle and edgier Praga, with advice on who each area suits.
The best area to stay in Warsaw depends on your trip. The Old Town and the Royal Route suit first-time visitors who want to walk to the sights, Srodmiescie works for anyone who values fast transport, Powisle gives you a calmer riverside base, and Praga trades polish for lower prices and more character. This guide covers four parts of the city and who each one fits. For the wider picture, start with our Warsaw destination guide.
Old Town and the Royal Route
Stay in the Old Town if you want to leave your hotel and walk straight into the main sights. This is the most compact base in the city, and it suits first-time visitors and families who prefer to explore on foot.
The reconstructed historic core centres on the Old Town Market Square, with the Royal Castle and Castle Square a couple of minutes away. From there the Royal Route runs south down Krakowskie Przedmiescie and continues along Nowy Swiat, which is lined with cafes and restaurants.
Accommodation here leans towards smaller boutique hotels and apartments rather than big chains. Rates are among the highest in Warsaw, and the square can get loud on summer weekends, so light sleepers may want a room set back from the main streets.
Srodmiescie around the Palace of Culture
Srodmiescie is the transport and business centre of Warsaw, built around the Palace of Culture and Science and the main railway station, Warszawa Centralna. Choose it if you arrive by train, plan day trips, or want a full-service hotel with predictable standards.
Both metro lines meet nearby at Swietokrzyska, along with trams and buses, so getting across the city or out to the airport is straightforward. This district holds most of the large international hotels and business towers. For a meal, the restored market hall Hala Koszyki is a short tram ride or walk south, and green space at Lazienki Park is within easy reach.
Powisle and the riverside
Powisle sits between the centre and the Vistula, and it is the calmer choice for a relaxed stay. It suits couples and returning visitors who have already seen the headline sights and want a quieter neighbourhood with good cafes.
The area runs down to the Vistula Boulevards, a wide riverside promenade that fills with people on warm evenings. Nearby you will find the Copernicus Science Centre and the free University of Warsaw Library roof garden, one of the better viewpoints in the city. Riverside bars such as Cud nad Wisla add to the easy-going mood.
Praga across the river
Praga, on the east bank of the Vistula, is the edgier and usually cheaper option. Rooms tend to cost less than in the Old Town, and the district appeals to travellers on a budget and those drawn to workshops, galleries and old courtyards.
Much of Praga survived the war without the total destruction seen on the west bank, so many of its tenements are original rather than rebuilt. The Neon Museum, which collects Cold War era signs and was long based in Praga, moved to the Palace of Culture and Science in 2025, while Warsaw Zoo sits beside the river on this bank. The M2 metro line runs under the Vistula, so the centre is only a few minutes away by train.
Which area suits you
In short: pick the Old Town for a first visit built around walking, Srodmiescie for transport and reliable hotels, Powisle for a quieter riverside stay, and Praga for lower prices with more grit. All four connect well by public transport, so you are never far from the sights listed in our roundup of things to do in Warsaw. Still deciding between cities? Our Krakow or Warsaw comparison can help.
