Central Park (Park Centralny), Olsztyn

Central Park (Park Centralny) is a 13-hectare English-style park running along the Łyna river through the middle of Olsztyn, and people come here to walk, cycle and gather at its solar-system fountain. Created during a major revitalisation completed in 2014, it turned a stretch of riverbank between Pieniężnego and Niepodległości streets into an open green space with paths, footbridges and an amphitheatre. It is one of the easiest places in the city to slow down for an hour without leaving the centre.

The park's centrepiece is an elliptical fountain set with several-ton hemispheres that sit partly submerged in the water, arranged to symbolise the solar system. The design is a deliberate nod to Nicolaus Copernicus, who lived and worked in Olsztyn, and it gives the park a talking point that most riverside green spaces do not have. Around it you will find footbridges crossing the Łyna, an amphitheatre used for events, and walking and cycling paths that follow the water. It is a compact area, so you can take in the main features on a single loop.

Central Park is a relatively recent addition to Olsztyn, laid out during a large revitalisation project completed in 2014 that reshaped this section of the Łyna valley. Rather than a formal ornamental garden, it was designed in the English style, with lawns, trees and curving paths that follow the river between Pieniężnego and Niepodległości streets. The Copernicus theme of the fountain ties the space to the city's astronomical history, since Copernicus carried out observations here in the sixteenth century.

The park works well for a slow stroll, a jog or a short cycle along the river, and families use the open lawns and paths through the day. Because it hosts an amphitheatre, it is also a venue for outdoor events, so timing your visit around a concert or seasonal gathering can change the atmosphere completely.
