What to see at the Olsztyn Planetarium
The Olsztyn Planetarium opened on 19 February 1973, the 500th anniversary of Copernicus's birth, and remains one of the largest in Poland. Its 15-metre dome and 200-seat auditorium host projected sky shows and astronomy films. Programmes and show times change, so check the planetarium's official channels before visiting.
The Astronomical Observatory in a historic water tower
A few hundred metres away, the Astronomical Observatory occupies a water tower built in 1897 and adapted for science in 1979. On clear days it opens the sky for observation of the Moon, Sun and planets, and its terrace gives a panorama over the city.
Why the planetarium honours Copernicus
The whole complex was created to mark the astronomer's ties to Warmia, where he lived and worked at nearby Olsztyn Castle. It makes a natural pairing with a castle visit for anyone following the Copernicus trail.
