Celej House (Nadwislanskie Museum)

Celej House (Kamienica Celejowska) is a decorated merchant townhouse on Senatorska Street, just off the Market Square in Kazimierz Dolny, built around 1635 for the Celej family and now a branch of the Vistula River Museum (Muzeum Nadwislanskie). People come for its ornate attic gable, widely described as the most beautiful in Poland, and for the art gallery inside, which gathers paintings of pre-war Kazimierz and portraits of the town's Jewish residents.

The front of Celej House rises into a tall attic gable crowded with sculptural detail, a signature of the Northern Mannerist style that shaped Kazimierz Dolny's grandest houses. Niches set into the stonework hold carved figures of Christ and the Virgin Mary, framed by scrollwork and ornamental panels. As a branch of the Vistula River Museum, Celej House holds a gallery devoted to the town's past.
