Inside Zamość's Bastion VII fortifications

The underground route leads for about half a kilometre through firing galleries, casemates in the curtain wall and Bastion No 7 itself, the largest of the seven bastions that once ringed Zamość. Along the way it explains how the defences changed over some 250 years of use.

A fortress that held out for centuries

Zamość Fortress was never captured by foreign troops in almost three centuries of service. The route lets visitors picture what it was like to defend the town, passing the fortress's largest underground hall of around 300 square metres, complete with embrasures and fireplaces.

Where the Bastion VII route begins

The walk starts at the postern at 2 Łukasińskiego Street, beside a shopping arcade set into the retrenchment. Opening hours and ticketing are handled by the fortress operator; check the official site before you go.

The Water Market is the smallest of Zamosc's three Renaissance Old Town squares, a quiet pedestrian plaza in the southern quarter with an illuminated fountain and the former Poor Clares church.
