What are the rules on alcohol and smoking?

The legal age to buy or drink alcohol is 18. Shops stop selling it late at night in some cities, and you will be asked for ID if you look young.

Drinking in public

Drinking alcohol in public places such as streets, squares, parks and beaches is generally prohibited, and the police do enforce it with fines. The place to drink is a licensed one: a bar, a restaurant, a terrace or a beer garden. Some cities designate specific zones where public drinking is allowed, but assume it is not unless a sign says otherwise.

Smoking and vaping

Smoking is banned indoors in enclosed public venues, so bars, restaurants and clubs are smoke-free unless they have a separate sealed smoking room. The same rules cover many transport stops and station platforms, and they apply to e-cigarettes in most indoor public settings. Smoke outdoors and away from doorways to stay within the rules.
