The short answer
The centre of Zakopane is walkable and the rest runs on minibuses and taxis. Private cars cannot use the road to Kuznice, so take a minibus marked Kuznice, a taxi or walk to the Kasprowy Wierch cable car. For Morskie Oko, book the Palenica Bialczanska car park online or take the park e-bus as far as Wlosienica.
Getting around Zakopane is really two questions. Inside the town you mostly walk. Getting from the town to the trailheads and the cable car is where visitors lose time, because the two most popular destinations have rules that a sat nav does not tell you about.
Do you need a car in Zakopane?
For the town, no.
Krupówki and the streets around it are made for walking, and a car becomes a parking problem the moment you arrive. A car can be useful for reaching the valleys and villages around the town, but the two places most visitors aim for, Kasprowy Wierch and Morskie Oko, are both easier without one.

is Zakopane worth visiting.
How do you get from Zakopane to Kuznice and Kasprowy Wierch?
By minibus, taxi or on foot. Tatra National Park states that minibuses marked Kuźnice run from the town's bus station, and that there are stops around the John Paul II roundabout, known locally as the Kuźnice roundabout. The road from that roundabout up to Kuźnice is closed to traffic, but the ban does not apply to regular public transport and taxis, city service vehicles or residents, among others. What it rules out is driving there in your own car, and the park's cable car page says the same: take a minibus or a taxi, or plan to walk.
Kuźnice is where the cable car to
Kasprowy Wierch starts. The park gives its line as 4,291.59 metres long with a height difference of 936 metres, ending at an upper station 1,959 metres above sea level. It also notes that the cable car is taken out of service for inspections every May and November, and does not run in winds above 20 m/s, in icing or when the temperature falls below minus 28°C.
Why do map apps send you the wrong way to Kuznice?
Because of the traffic ban. The national park warns that typing the address Kuźnice 1 into apps such as Google Maps can produce a route to Bulwary Słowackiego, with the rest suggested on foot. That is the app working around the closed road, not an error in your phone. Follow the minibus or walk rather than trying to find a way to drive in.
How do you get to Morskie Oko from Zakopane without a car?
The trail to
Morskie Oko starts at Palenica Białczańska, and the national park states that it can be reached by car or by public transport from Zakopane and nearby towns. In season the park also runs its own electric e-buses. The route open to everyone runs between Zakopane, at the park's Nature Education Centre, and Polana Włosienica, and another runs between Palenica Białczańska and Włosienica. Only the route for people with disabilities continues to the lake itself.
The e-bus is seasonal. The park announced its return to the Morskie Oko route from 30 April, and the published timetable is valid until 14 October 2026. The park adds that the route may be shortened if snow or ice makes the road unsafe. Outside that window, plan on the regular transport to Palenica Białczańska.
Can you drive and park at Morskie Oko?
You can drive to the official Tatra National Park car park at Palenica Białczańska and Łysa Polana, and walk from there. The park describes the car park as three sections: one at the trail entrance, one along the road up to 1 km from the entrance, and one at Łysa Polana about 1.5 km away. Where you park depends on the order of arrival, and drivers cannot choose a space. The park describes the walk to the lake as an approach of about 8 km on an asphalt road.
Prices are dynamic. The park gives an online price for a car of 36 to 75 PLN, depending on the season, how full the car park is and how far ahead you buy. A ticket bought on the spot from the attendants costs a fixed price that is always the highest, and is only available if the spaces have not already sold out. The park recommends buying online, ideally a few days in advance.
How does getting around Zakopane change out of season?
The Kuźnice road stays closed to private cars, so the minibus or a taxi remains the answer for the cable car, which also stops for inspections every November. The 2026 e-bus timetable is valid until 14 October, and the Morskie Oko car park runs on seasonal pricing, so check the park's site for the dates you are travelling. Whether the town will actually be white when you get there is a separate question, answered in
is there snow in Zakopane.
