Łódź Murals (Urban Forms Gallery)

The Urban Forms Gallery is an open-air collection of large-scale murals painted across Łódź, and it is the biggest of its kind in Poland, with artworks covering the walls of more than 170 buildings. People come to walk the city and read its architecture as a gallery, seeing full-height paintings by well-known Polish and international street artists rather than a single fixed exhibition behind a ticket desk.

The gallery brings together some of the biggest names in mural painting. Polish artists lead the roster, including the Etam Crew and M-City, whose work you will find spread across different districts. Alongside them are international figures such as Brazil's Os Gêmeos and China's DALeast, so a single walk can move between very different styles, from surreal storytelling to fine linework. Because the collection keeps growing, the exact line-up on show shifts over time.

The murals are not a one-off event but the result of a long-running programme. The Urban Forms Foundation launched the project in 2009 with the aim of brightening the cityscape through public art, turning blank and worn walls into permanent works. Over the years this has built up into a citywide collection rather than a cluster in one spot, which is why the paintings turn up on residential blocks and side streets as well as main thoroughfares.

The practical way to see the gallery is on foot, following mapped mural trails that run through the centre. Most of the works sit in Śródmieście and the surrounding area, though the collection reaches beyond it, so it helps to plan a loop rather than hunt at random. Set aside a few hours if you want to reach a good number of walls, and check the foundation's official channels for the current map, since new murals are added and locations change.
