Zemborzycki Lake

Zemborzycki Lake, Zalew Zemborzycki, is a large reservoir on the southern edge of Lublin, made by damming the Bystrzyca river. It is the city's main spot for the water: beaches, lakeside walking and cycling trails, and watersports through the summer. At roughly 270 hectares it is big enough to feel like open country while still sitting inside the city boundary.

It is where Lublin comes to cool off and get outdoors. In summer the beaches fill, and the water draws sailors, paddlers and anglers. The shore has flat paths good for walking and cycling, and the surrounding woods add shade. After a couple of days in the historic centre it makes an easy half-day change of pace.

Swimming from the beaches, sailing and paddling, fishing and lakeside cycling are the main draws. A summer pool and water-attraction complex operates on the Wrotkow side. The reservoir is shallow, so it warms up in the season and suits families. Come mainly in the warmer months, as the shore is quiet out of season.

The lake is not natural. It was created in the early 1970s by building a dam across the Bystrzyca, both to hold water and to give the city a place for recreation. The wooded and open ground around it has been developed for beaches, sport and walking in the decades since.

Summer is the season, from roughly June to August, when the beaches and water attractions are open and the lake is warm enough to swim. Spring and autumn suit walking and cycling the shore without the crowds. Winter is quiet.

The lake lies on the southern edge of the city, reachable by bus from the centre or by bike along the Bystrzyca. Drivers will find car parks near the main beaches. It is a longer hop than the central sights, so plan it as its own trip. For routes, see the Lublin guide.
