Krakow at Easter: Markets, Closures and Wet Monday
Easter is the one weekend when a city that never seems to close does exactly that, and almost nobody warns visitors first.

The short answer
Krakow holds an Easter market on the Main Market Square in the days before Easter, smaller than the Christmas one and heavy on food and decorated eggs. Easter Sunday and Easter Monday are public holidays when most shops shut, and on Monday people throw water at each other.
Easter is a bigger event in Poland than in most of Western Europe, and it catches visitors out in both directions. The city is at its most characterful, and it is also at its most closed. Knowing which days are which turns a frustrating weekend into a good one.
The Easter market
The market occupies the same ground as the Christmas one, on the Main Market Square around the Cloth Hall, and runs in the run-up to Easter rather than after it. Because Easter is a moveable feast the dates shift by weeks from year to year, so the city announces them in advance and that listing is the only reliable source.
It is smaller and more food-led than the December market. The things worth looking for are pisanki, the decorated eggs, palms made of dried flowers and grasses, and the seasonal baking. Bring cash for the same reason as in December, which we cover in do you need cash in Krakow.
What closes, and when
Easter Sunday and Easter Monday are both public holidays in Poland. Expect most shops to be shut, reduced or suspended public transport timetables, and many restaurants closed or on holiday hours. Good Friday is a normal working day in Poland, which surprises British and Irish visitors, and Holy Saturday is one of the busiest shopping days of the year.
Museums vary and several close for at least part of the weekend, and the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial is closed on Easter Sunday itself, which matters if you had planned that as your day trip. Smigus-dyngus, or why you are wet
On Easter Monday, known as Śmigus-dyngus or Wet Monday, throwing water is a genuine, widely observed custom. In practice this means children with water pistols and buckets, mostly in residential districts rather than in the tourist centre, but a visitor walking through a park on Easter Monday should not assume immunity. Take it in good humour and keep the camera in a bag.
Church, and why it matters here
Krakow has an exceptional density of churches and Easter is when they are fullest. Services over the Triduum are long, crowded and worth attending respectfully if you are curious, and Holy Saturday brings families to churches with baskets of food to be blessed, which is one of the most photographed customs in the country.
If you are visiting churches as sights rather than for services, note that sightseeing is restricted during services, particularly at St Mary's Basilica on the square.
Is Easter a good time to come?
It is one of the more interesting weekends in the Polish year and the weather is usually mild, but it is not the weekend for an efficient sightseeing schedule.
