Mariacka Street (ulica Mariacka)

Mariacka Street (ulica Mariacka) is Katowice's main nightlife street, a pedestrian lane in the Śródmieście city centre packed with bars, restaurants and cafes. People come here after dark for the concentration of places to eat and drink, and in spring for the cherry trees that line the pavement in bloom. It is one of the most atmospheric spots in Katowice for an evening stroll or a night out, running toward the neo-Gothic St. Mary's Church that gives the street its name.

Mariacka has two distinct moods. By day it is quiet, an easy place to walk under the trees or sit with a coffee, with the tower of St. Mary's Church closing off one end of the view. After dark the bars and restaurants fill up and the street becomes the busiest going-out address in the centre. If you visit in spring, the roughly 30 cherry trees planted along it come into blossom, which is the most photographed moment of the year here.

The street takes its name from St. Mary's Church (Kościół Mariacki), the neo-Gothic church it points toward. Mariacka was closed to cars in 2008, which turned it into a walkable social space rather than a route to drive down. In 2011 around 30 cherry trees were planted along the lane, and those two changes together, the pedestrianisation and the greenery, are what shaped the nightlife strip you see today.

This is a street for people who want bars and restaurants within a few steps of each other rather than a single landmark to tick off. Come in the evening if you are after atmosphere and somewhere to drink; come by day if you prefer it calm, or in spring for the blossom. Mariacka sits in the compact city centre, close to the main squares and easy to reach on foot from most central points, which makes it a natural end to a day of sightseeing.
