Best Day Trips from Wroclaw

South and west of Wroclaw the land rises toward the Sudetes, dotted with castles, spa towns and mountain trails. Regional trains and coaches reach Walbrzych, Swidnica, Karpacz and Trzebnica, though several sites are easier with a car. The nearest, Trzebnica, is under an hour away by bus.

Ksiaz Castle paired with Swidnica

  1. 1

    Ksiaz Castle

The third largest castle in Poland crowns a wooded ridge near Walbrzych, about 70 km southwest. A regional train to Walbrzych Miasto plus city bus 8 or 12 takes around 2 hours 20 minutes, while a direct coach covers it in roughly 90 minutes. Its 400-plus rooms and the wartime tunnels dug beneath it make for a substantial visit.

  2. 2

    Swidnica (Church of Peace)

The Church of Peace here is a UNESCO site and the largest timber-framed church in Europe, built only from wood, loam and straw under the restrictions imposed after the Peace of Westphalia in 1648. Swidnica lies about 50 km southwest of Wroclaw, under an hour by car, and is often paired with Ksiaz Castle on the same day.

  3. 3

    Karpacz and Mount Sniezka

The Karkonosze mountains rise along the Czech border about 100 km southwest. Trains reach Jelenia Gora in around two hours, with a local bus on to the resort town of Karpacz, the usual base for climbing Sniezka, at 1,603 metres the highest peak in Poland outside the Tatras. The summit hike fills most of a day, so drivers have the easier time.

    Trzebnica

The Basilica of St Jadwiga, a 13th century pilgrimage church holding the tomb of St Hedwig of Silesia, stands about 25 km north of Wroclaw. Regular buses make the trip in roughly 45 minutes, which makes this the shortest outing on the list and an easy half day.
