Olsztyn Castle (Zamek w Olsztynie) is a ruined hilltop fortress about 15 km from Częstochowa, set on the limestone crags of the Kraków-Częstochowa Jura. It is one of the best-known stops on the Eagles' Nests Trail.
The history of the Olsztyn ruins
The castle was raised on rocks in the second half of the 13th century as part of a defensive line, then enlarged under Casimir the Great. From the mid-17th century it declined, with its walls damaged during the Swedish Deluge of the 1650s.
What to see at the Olsztyn Castle ruins
The most recognisable feature is the cylindrical tower, about 35 m tall, built from white limestone and later capped with brown brick. The ruins stand among scenic Jurassic rock formations. Confirm current opening times and any tickets on the castle's official site.
