Sopot Lighthouse is a 30-metre tower beside the pier entrance that visitors climb for one of the best 360-degree views in town, taking in the pier, the Baltic coast and the rooftops of Sopot. Completed in 1904, it is one of the resort's most visited climbable viewpoints, partly because it sits only a few steps from where the wooden pier begins.

The view from the platform

A stone spiral staircase of about 135 steps runs up the inside of the tower to a viewing platform at the top. From there the panorama is a full 360 degrees: the long wooden pier reaching out into the bay, the open Baltic, the beach and the tiled rooftops of the town behind you. It is a compact climb, so the reward comes quickly, and the height is enough to put the whole seafront layout in a single sweep.

A chimney in disguise

The tower was not originally built as a navigation light. When it was completed in 1904 it disguised the chimney of a boiler that heated water for the spa's balneological treatments, the mineral and seawater baths that made Sopot a working health resort. That practical origin explains why it stands at Skwer Kuracyjny, right by the cure park and the pier, rather than out on a breakwater like a working harbour light.
